B-SHO: Interactive Digital Installation for Pause Fest 2011

Qantm Create Design Awards Shortlist 2012

Pause Fest 2011 is a not-for-profit, week-long manifestation of the digital and creative industries, running from 7-13 November across the Melbourne CBD.

With categories including animation, installations, interactive, motion graphics, sound design, TVC, VFX and VJ, Pause Fest 2011 promises to be a stunning showcase of work from the world's most creative minds of the 21st century.

Studio Equator was invited to contribute a new piece of work to Pause Fest 2011 to be displayed at Shot Tower Square in Melbourne Central.

It was important to us that Studio Equator's contribution to Pause Fest 2011 reflected our creative business ethos. We wanted to create a dramatic, fun and unique digital experience that would showcase our multidisciplinary skills in a structural manner, whilst making a relevant and meaningful contribution to the digital cultural movement. Most importantly, we wanted the experience to make people smile.

The result was an interactive digital installation we have affectionately named 'B-SHO'.

Taken from ‘bisho’, the Japanese word for ‘smile’, B-SHO was a concept born out of our Creative Director's (Carlos Flores) childhood passion for Japanese Manga, and is freakishly reminiscent of the Robot-Manga culture of the late 1970s and 1980s (think Mazinger Z vs. Gundam Wing). BSHO’s structural form is a fusion of culture, digital technology and design, and was created to inspire fun and creativity in all those who engage with it.

B-SHO's colossal exterior is made entirely of mirror acrylic or 'Euromir', allowing for a unique multi-dimensional viewing experience. BSHO’s animated eyes are 22-inch digital touch-screens, which visitors can interact with to design their own unique faces from a set of special features, and will receive a digital gift for playing the game.  Combining digital innovation with graphic design, architectural form and structure with interactive multimedia experience, and function with aesthetic, B-SHO is a culmination of a range of creative disciplines. It is an embodiment of Studio Equator's creative business vision, our creative process and our multidisciplinary capabilities.

B-SHO is an example of the cultural aspect evident in all of Studio Equator's work. As a team, we possess an ever current, solid and diverse understanding of global trends and cultures. As a result, our designs have global appeal, are culturally relevant, and translate and communicate cross-culturally.
