Walter Van Beirendonck: Dream the World Awake

A major retrospective of the work of internationally acclaimed Belgian designer and fashion maverick Walter Van Beirendonck will be presented for the first time outside of Europe, at RMIT University’s new Design Hub from 17 July until 5 October 2013.

Dealing with ecology, fetishism, ethnography, S&M and mass consumerism; Van Beirendonck is famed for his uncompromising approach, an approach that owes just as much to art as it does to fashion.

Designing the costumes for U2′s landmark PopMart tour, the Belgian designer pioneered ‘cyberpunk’ clothing with his high-tech ‘techno’ fabrics; and he’s never been shy of controversy and confrontation.

In the autumn of 2011, the Antwerp Fashion Museum presented the inaugural retrospective exhibition of an exhaustive retrospective of Van Beirendonck’s work and his inspiration; with Walter’s Wonderwall – a 60 metre collage of images, slogans, objects and videos – and a new collaboration with fashion photographer Nick Knight/SHOWstudio.com, stylist Simon Foxton and GQ Style UK accompanying his key works from the last 30 years.

His work combines diverse sources of inspiration, ranging from technology, fine art and pop culture to ethnographic sources.

This compelling presentation now travels to Australia courtesy of the philanthropic leadership of Naomi Milgrom AO – an Australian business leader, philanthropist and passionate supporter of leading design, architecture, arts and scientific initiatives.
